Summer is the busiest season for supermarkets - there are always openings. I happen to know this because I have spent most of my life working in major grocery stores. For the most part, they are good jobs. I eventually wound up in the deli department. The pay and benefits are great.

There is a slight drawback that I would like to mention about grocery stores though - they tend to have a pretty vicious and pervasive gossip/grapevine thing going on. Everyone who works there seems to know everyone else's business (things like 'who's she dating', 'who's he dating', 'I don't like him', 'they were arguing last night', etc.) Just tons and tons of gossip completely unrelated to the job at hand. Don't let yourself get drawn into the gossip circle. It can bite you. Just do your job. Naturally you should be a little conversational and you will make friends at the store. Just don't tell them TOO much about your personal life - because then EVERY employee in the store will know about it if they don't have the common sense or respect to keep their mouth shut.

There are temp services call CBS or Manpower where they have openings with manufacturers, retail, and any other field there is. If you like movies, go to a theater for a job. Go to a Wal Mart and apply for a job, they have several shifts and a variety of jobs. If you have your diploma or a GED, apply at the post office. If you want to drive a semi-truck, apply at different trucking companies, some train on the job. What are you going to college for, look for jobs in that field on your own, or one of the temp agencies may place you as a junior position for experience.
There are jobs out there, just go out there and look. You may not get one today, or maybe tomorrow or the next, just keep trying.

You sound like you have a problem in your past that is holding you back.

Three suggestions.
1. Apply at smaller companies they most likely will not do a background check.
2. Apply at a company that does a back ground check but tell them about your past history.
3. Check out Snag a Job as a job board or go to craigslist.org.
