Well, the obvious advantage is that you get pocket money if you're in school, and that it's a necessity to pay the bills and rent if you're a uni student (if you don't get hand-outs from mum and dad).

The disadvantage is that it directs attention away from study and can interfere with your schedule, and sometimes you get put in bad positions (e.g. having to work the night before an exam or risk getting fired).
