Im an incoming BS Psychology student, what job....???

We Answered:

hey, i'm also an entering freshman in UST, but i'm in med tech. anyways, with a BS in psychology you can practically get into any job you want, like it can lead you to law school, or it can act as your pre-med to get into med school. or you can stick with it and become a guidance counselor, i'm not that sure if you can become a teacher though i think it's possible. :)

I am a psychology student and would like to find a job while still in school. Any suggestions?

We Answered:

I/O Psychology is a highly specialized field with very little opportunities while still a student. Going through school I always liked that career path, too. Nonetheless, if you really want that field, there are a few options. Most of them involve volunteering. An excellent "make or break" volunteer choice is a local hotline for any number of crisis areas to include absued kids, spouses, or suicides. These phone lines are 24 hours a day and offer you available work hours. They also look good on a resume for 3 reasons: Volunteerism, community involvement, and high stress environment. The high stress environment is what you will find with your I/O specialty.

Also, I/O tends to do alot of analysis of work environment, how to get the most productivity out of workers, etc. So you could petition a professor to sponsor you and a couple of other Psych students to do research. Often the schools can get grants or will give out their own grants to allow you to do this. Plus it gives you the opportunity to get published so make your research count. And you may want to make it on a topic that deals with industrial psychology and the workplace.

You can find these jobs through your school's student services department. They get gobs of volunteer and entry-level requests from local businesses. Also, show initiative. Use your newspaper or yellow-pages to find a company you want to work for and open the door yourself. Often times they will find a way to help you in the door if you come across as a smart and motivated worker.

When I got my first degree, I applied for what I thought was my dream job. I got turned down. Soon after I started working for another agency and have been able to see since then how miserable I would have been if I'd gotten my "dream job."
We all take life in steps. Your career will be the same way. Learn what you can from each step along the way.
