You need to send your resume out to real jobs you are qualified to do.

In your cover letter you need to state that you wish to work remotely, from your home office. LOTS of companies, especially in CA operate this way. They usually provide transportation for you to come in for an interview and for you to attend company meetings a few times a year, but otherwise everything is done online.

My first piece of advice to you would be that you ignore the first response you got. They're clearly inexperienced or misinformed in the subject.

Secondly, Online Jobs do definitely exist. I happen to employ over 10 people right now who work remotely (from home) online doing a variety of tasks. These positions are very real and can be found quite easily for the ambitious and tenacious job-seeker.

HOWEVER! It's important that you also realize that for every 1 real "Work From Home" or "Work Online" job that you find there are at least 10 scams out there. It's extremely important that you do your research first and foremost and understand a few ground rules.

1. Any job that requires you pay money or buy anything is a scam.
2. Any job that refuses to give you a real company name is most likely not real.
3. Any job that won't be providing you with a W-2 or W-9 contract is not legit.

Moving on to the root of your question, a "Remote" or "work from home" position can afford a college student a great deal of benefits. Most importantly I suppose, is that these positions are very flexible and can be done on your own time. So for a student these positions allow the student to take classes during the day and work when they have free time. That would probably be the greatest benefit.

Most work from home positions use a W-9 contractor tax form which means that the company won't be assisting you with your taxes, however. That's an unfortunate downside.

If you are looking for a so called "online job" you will never find anything, at worse you will get scammed.
To earn money online you must work on your own, this isn't necessarily impossible but it requires a different mind set.
You can publish ads on your site/blog, provide writing services, webmaster services and more.

I've tried lots of different things to earn money from home. None of them were scams, but the majority of them didn't earn the kind of money I would have liked to be earning. Eventually, I found a home based business that didn't cost money to get started with. It's been the best thing for my family and I love what I'm doing now.
