Look for the Workforce Center in your area. They should have a summer job hunt for youth. If there isn't one near you, it's not a bad idea to volunteer at first. This builds your skills, gets you noticed by people who work in the field you are interested in, and provides on the job training to you with the benefit of, if you mess up, you can't be fired. If you do decide to volunteer somewhere, try to learn all the different areas of the job and ask for a letter of recommendation when you leave. Network, network, network. Make a list of all the people you know, including your friend's parents, and let everyone know you are looking for work. Make up a resume' for yourself listing the skills you have. You might think you don't have any, but YOU DO. Think back to all the things you have done in the past, did you have a paper route, take care of pets, clean house, do yardwork, or work on cars with your dad? All of these carry skill sets that are 'transferable skills' into the work world. It's never too late to start building the skills you want for tomorrow's job or career.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Retail. I've been doing it for 18 years. I work in a department store and somedays it's really hectic. There is always something to do. If is it is slow, find something to do...it will pass the time quicker and the store will look better, too.
