I do not believe that setting challenging but attainable goals encourages people to improve their work performance. It only increases the amount of work required by the goal setter.

Goal setting measures the abilities of those that are interested.

To encourage people you have to get them interested and keep them interested. If they have no real interest, then performance will be poor regardless of the amount of work required.

One could become encouraged to a better job by seeing a poor job and realizing they could do better.

In this case bringing the class to a point where they see how good a presentation can be if it has 20 slides and 25-30 reference sources would be encouraging them that 15 slides and 20 sources is not unreasonable for a good presentation.

The first 2 answerers do not read your question properly as their answers are relevant for local students.

As an international students in Australia, you are restricted to work max 20hrs/week during semester study period, and full-time during semester holiday period. As an international student, you MUST study full-time. The main reason for the regulation is to make sure that international students only focus themselves on studying, not both. So with this restriction, there is NO WAY that you can support yourself from income in Australia, much less your tuition fee. Therefore if you are planning to study in Australia, please budget yourself carefully. I have seen plenty of my fellow international students discontinued their study halfway due to budget problems.

You know how much tuition fees for international students are per year (depending on your course). Then you have to also consider living expenses like rent, transport, food, recreation etc. If you want to cover tuition & living expenses, you are expected to work full-time, minimum as an admin staff, not low-level jobs like cleaners.

Please do not misunderstand my intention. I welcome international students to come, but I think I better not sugarcoat the truth so you know the situation clearly. If you work for more than 20hrs and get caught, you will be very likely to be deported. The immigration now also running checks on employers to see if they are employing the ppl with the right work visa/permit. So it is getting very tight now.

The only employment than an international student is permitted to carry out is working on-campus and you are limited to 20 hours per week during the semester and full-time during the holidays.

No off-campus employment is permited except in cases of financial hardship that has not be foreseen.

As for paying the for extra costs, most international students are self-funded. Relying on the financial support of their parents, family members and the money which they have saved themselves. Some international students also take out small personl loans in their own country, but you must be careful and be aware of how much you will have to pay back on these.

Scholarships generally do not cover these extra expenses, they either pay for full or partial tution costs and not things like rent, utilites, gas, insurance etc.
