You can apply for loans 180 days before you start. You should actually be approved and done 30 days prior so the school can certify them with the lender. The school needs to accept you and then they will inform the lender that you will be attending their college. But you can pre-approve in advance and then inform the lender what school you are attending.

are you applying for federal loans like stafford and perkins through fafsa? or for private loans through a bank?
federal loans can be deferred as long as you are in school, IDk about the private student loans, perhaps they have their own rules. I deferred mine all throughout med school as they were all need-based federal loans, I did have some friends that were paying back earlier though none while in school that I knew of

You will be able to apply for Student Support at the same time as applying though UCAS for your University place. There will be a link from UCAS to do this about October time. I think the UCAS site will have a section to check bursaries at the different Uni's - it should tell you when and how there.
