Fafsa Student Loans

Priscilla Said:

i have a question about FAFSA and student loans?

We Answered:

You won't qualify for grants but you will qualify for the Stafford Loan.

The Stafford is part of financial aid as it is not a credit based loan.

Terrence Said:

Other than FAFSA, what are some good student loans?

We Answered:

sallie mae does good loans and so does ed financial or ed america

Alan Said:

If a person is over 24 and parents claim them on taxes will it effect FAFSA/Student loans?

We Answered:

Actually, Suddenly is partially correct (in telling you that your tax dependency does not impact your financial aid dependency), and partially incorrect (her explanation of tax law).

Though your parents could not claim you as a qualifying child for income tax purposes, they may be able to claim you as a qualifying relative, provided that all of the criteria are met.

Your parents can claim a qualifying relative dependent if:

You do not otherwise qualify as someone else's qualifying child
You earned less than $3500 in 2008.
Your parents provided more than 50% of your financial support in 2008.
You are related to the taxpayer in certain ways (sons and daughters are)
You do not file a joint return with a spouse.

So - your parents CAN possibly claim you as a dependent.

And - regardless of whether they do or not, this has no impact on the fact that you will be considered a financial aid independent, both because you are over 24 years of age AND because you are in graduate school.

Good luck.

I just need some help in ways to get money for college through fafsa or student loans or anywhere to start?

We Answered:

Yes you can go to school!!!
Do just as the other person suggested... go to and apply for federal financial aid. Even if you don't qualify for grants, they will offer you student loans to help cover the costs of school. Are your parents in this country now? Depending on your circumstances and because of your age, you will probably have to put your parents income on your fafsa application. If your parents are in another country, there may be exceptions, I've never run across this actually so call the financial aid office of your school or call 1-800-4FED AID if this is the case.
One more note about loans: I always discourage people from taking out student loans unless they absolutely have to. And then I only recommend doing it the last two years of your bachelor's degree. By then, you know you are serious and will actually graduate. But if its a choice between not going or taking out the loan... take out the loan, and remember you MUST FINISH YOUR DEGREE... or you'll wind up still working at McDonalds as an assistant manager, just with an added burden of a student loan.
Spend a ton of time on the internet looking for scholarships, (it's too late for the fall semester for scholarships - most of these deadlines were up in March or April) but it's never too early to look for next year) you will have the best luck at the school you are going to attend. The scholarship search websites are okay, and I think you should still invest time in searching for them, but who knows how many thousands of people apply.

I worked at McDonalds for three years, and my mother was a store manager for years... I saw her work her a*** off with crappy and long hours. We went back to college together and both of us graduated. I wouldn't give up my time there, Honestly - I had a blast working there as a kid... but I knew I couldn't have the lifestyle or car I wanted on those wages.

Would you like fries with that at $3.35 an hour?
Good Luck!!

Shelly Said:

How exactly does FAFSA work in terms of student loans?

We Answered:

FAFSA is a clearinghouse that stores all your financial information and your family's financial information. They come up with a bottom line (your EFC, or Expected Family Contribution) that all U.S. colleges will use when they're putting together your financial aid package.

I don't exactly know how that works when you're applying to an international school, but if you're going to be applying to any U.S. sources for loans, that's definitely one of the ways they'll check out your financial situation to see what you're going to need.
