How Student Loans Work

Jacob Said:

Can someone explain how transferring colleges w/ student loans work please?

We Answered:

Um... Yes, you would need to add your new school's code to your FAFSA, as that person has said.. and that does apply to your federal student loans, not just grants.
That is part of your financial aid... anything you got just from applying for the fafsa is part of your federal financial aid.
If you got loans from somewhere else, that is outside financial aid. It would depend on the conditions of the loan.

If you only have federal loans (from filing the fafsa), you don't have to start paying them until you are out of school for 6 months or more, or less than half time. If you are transferring, you will still be in school. If I'm not mistaken, you will be offered new aid for the new school.
