Many student loans are federally backed loans -- which means that you do not have to undergo a credit check. This includes stafford, perkins, and I believe plus loans.

before you apply for a student loan check out some other avenues out there, because there are many. For example, it does hurt to apply for the pell grant which is free money just go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
fill out an application and see if you are qualified. Fill it out and middlesex comm. col. will send you a letter saying that you're qualify or you can go back to that site and check the status of your application. and when you get an EFC code (the lower the better) call your comm. col and tell them - better yet go to your college's financial aid department and inquire about it. Also ask financial aid department in your college if they are offering any scholarships most of the time colleges would have in house scholarships. good luck.

It made a decision to consider 6 credits to be "half time" and not to fund guaranteed loans for students attending school less than half time. That's just the cut off that was decided upon.

If you need to take a 5 credit class each quarter and you need financial assistance to do so, why not register for an additional 1-credit class each quarter so you will have 6 credits and be eligible for loans?

Usually you can find 1-credit classes somewhere in the curriculum: physical education, art appreciation, career exploration, remedial math classes, singing in the choir or playing in the band, something...
