While you do have to pay these back and there are fees involved they are much less costly than taking out a private student loan or a personal loan. The stafford and perkins loans are not based on credit rating but on your student status (you must be at least half time with a 2.0 gpa and satisfactorily working towards your degree, so no students at large)

You should definitely look into the Stafford loans, but you sould also check every avenue you can for other financial aid. Check with the school's alumni office. They often have scholarships that go unclaimed from year to year, and your financial aid office can also help. Your credit usually isn't going to completely prevent you from getting loans, but you may have to spend much more time looking.

Work part time and work at school too. Take only one class until you have enough money to pay for school. In the mean time pay your debt and try to get your score higher.

Personally I would never get student loans. If you cant affor it dont do it until you can.
