Student Financial Aid
Clinton Said:
Can a person still get financial student aid if they have bad credit? We Answered:
If you have a federal student loan that is in default, you will be ineligible to obtain any type of federal student aid, including grants.Other than that, Federal Student Aid tends to be non-credit-based. The two major federal student loan programs -- Stafford and Perkins -- require no credit check. In fact, your Financial Aid office is *prohibited* from checking your credit as a condition for receiving this loan. Most students are awarded a Stafford loan of some sort -- students who show financial need are awarded a Subsidized Stafford Loan, while no-need students will receive an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.
Federal, state, and institutional grants/scholarships are also non-credit-based (again, with the one stipulation that you not be in default on any student loans).
Now, there are some types of federal student loans that will subject you to a credit check -- specifically PLUS loans -- though, frankly, these credit checks don't tend to be as deep as others.
If you wish to borrow a private educational loan (i.e. a loan not offered by the federal gov't, state gov't, or by your school), your credit will also be run. In these instances, it will generally be required that you have good credit OR, at least, that you have a co-signer who does.
Arthur Said:
Does applying for student financial aid affect my credit score in any way?We Answered:
Filling out the FAFSA does not have any affect on your credit. Now, if you accept loans given to you and never pay them back then you have a problem.BUT just applying for financial aid does not.

Is my student financial aid gonna be garnished? We Answered:
I can maybe see them not giving you the loan because of your credit state, depending on the source. For example, if it's a direct loan you should be fine, but if it's from say Sallie May there could be trouble. As for the grant you should be fine. Just be forewarned, anything that you get back in the form of a check, that supposed to be used for housing, books, ect, they may take. So if your school offers a book advance definitely take it to make sure you get the books you need. With the scholarship, it depends on who awards the scholarship and how it's disbursed. If it's payed directly to the school odds are you'll be fine. Good luck and I hope things get better!Glen Said:
