What's the best student loan for someone without a cosigner?

We Answered:

Herein lies the entire "point" of the federal government's Stafford Loan program. The Stafford Loan is a no-cosigner, no income, no credit history loan intended to provide financial assistance for US college students, who would otherwise be unable to qualify for a student loan.

There are no "private" (as opposed to government) student loans for students with little or no income, a modest (or non-existent) credit history and no cosigner. You'll receive as many as 20 or 30 "come ons" from phony lenders who want to entice you to pass along your personal info, but you'd be well advised to steer far clear of all of these. No legitimate lender advertises its services on Yahoo! Answers, especially not with free, throw-away email addresses, and with pitches written in the horrible English that belies their claims that they're all from "Texas USA" and other seemingly innocuous places.

If you don't have a significant income right now, you have no means to repay the loan.

If you don't have a well-established positive credit history, you have no "references" that demonstrate that you are a responsible borrower.

You're a stranger to every lender, and they're not about to lend you several thousand dollars because you seem like a nice person. Nor are they particularly impressed that you're going to college - lots of people never finish college, or wind up majoring in snail farming. They're not going to take the risk that you'll finish college and get a great job in a few years.

A cosigner is someone with a good income and a well-established credit history. Lenders will approve loans for students who have cosigners, because the cosigner is agreeing to accept full legal responsibility for repaying the loan. Once you provide a cosigner, the lender no longer cares if YOU will actually pay the loan - they certainly hope you will, but they're covered either way.

You will not find a big dollar student loan without a cosigner, unless you are that very exceptional student with a good income that will continue while you're in college. I'm sorry for the disappointing news, but if you'll accept this advice, you'll save yourself a lot of time and aggravation searching for one. You can borrow $5500 to $7500 from the Stafford Loan program without a cosigner, so hopefully you've taken advantage of that opportunity.

Good luck!

Can You Get a Student Loan With No Cosigner?

We Answered:

The only way is if you have excellent credit.

However, if you have had financial hardships in the past year (or your parents if you're under 24), you MIGHT be able to get grants. I was able to get $4200 in grants because of my parents' low income and because my dad was laid off for more than 8 weeks. I also got $2000 in federal Perkins loans, which are based on income level. I recommend talking to your financial aid advisor ASAP, and they will usually have a paper for you to fill out.
