How can I get my student loan debt paid for or forgiven?

We Answered:

You could be a prime candidate for loan forgiveness (or cancellation), depending on what types of loans you have and where/what/who you teach (and how long you have been teaching). See the link below under sources for the specific wording of the regulations that govern teacher loan forgiveness.

Perkins Loan Cancellations are made for special education teachers; teachers in low income schools (schools eligible for funding under Chapter 1 of the Education Consolidation and Improvement Act of '81); and "teachers of math, science, foreign languages, bilingual education, or any field of expertise determined by the state education agency to have a shortage of qualified teachers," and "providers/supervisors of the provision of services to high-risk children from low-income communities and their families."

Stafford and Perkins loans each have their own criteria and their own forms. Look into both of them (if you have both loan types). You will need to request cancellation forms from each company (lender or service) who holds your loans.

Effective July 2006, teacher loan forgiveness provisions are being expanded.

I am a disabled veteran looking for student loans?

We Answered:

You can get a federal loan by filling out the fafsa at http://fafsa.ed.gov you don't need a cosigner and you don't have to pass a credit check to get one. Independent freshman can borrow up to 9,500 a year. Choose a school that costs less than this and you will get the excess to help you with living expenses. Choose a school that costs more than this and you will have to fork over some serious cash. (My local com college costs less than 3,000 a year).

Quitting your job and living off loans when you have a family is almost entirely impossible unless you have a spouse willing to take up the slack. THose kids you hear of not working and just going to school had NO LIFE before college so they don't have the car payment, the mortgage, the insurance and all the other expenses you have as a parent.

You have a couple of options, all of which I would discuss with your spouse... consider working part time and asking the spouse to get a second job if you want to maintain the same standard of living. If that isn't an option you could rent out your house (or sell it) and move in with relatives (no rent) while you are not working and cant afford rent or a house payment or a car payment (sell the car). Cancel all the cell phones and you might be able to live on what is left over after your tuition and fees and books are paid for if you choose a cheap school.

I would also look into getting veterans educatonal beneifts to see if you qualify for those.

Getting a degree is about sacrificing what you are, for what you can BECOME.

What is the best student loan?

Stephanie, have you consider to apply for scholarship instead of student loans? Many people has to struggling to pay the loans back because of the high interest rate. Some friends of mine in college told me that they have valuable information regarding scholarships from this place.
Good luck

Can a creditor garnish a disabled veteran's VA benefits for defaulting on a student loan?

We Answered:

The only way this would be possible is if your student loan is backed by the Government because the Government is the only source that can garnish VA disability or S.S.I.

Jails for food, education, fun and health care. Got a better answer to student loans, housing & health care?

We Answered:

I seriously doubt you want your kids locked in prison with Bob the very large and violent predator. But if that is what it takes for you to send them to school... I'd consider that a really desperate measure. If you gave most people in prison a choice between those benefits and freedom, I'm guessing they'd choose freedom.
