The interest rates are usually low (4%),.. once they go into repayment they usually go up to 8 1/2 %.. if u consolidate they are usually cheaper at repayment. Go to the Fafsa website and fill out the papers...this gets the ball rolling.. U might also consider researching scholarships and private loans online..

I'm convinced student loans are a way of keeping the middle class and the poor from getting higher in life. I came from a middle class family and I didn't receive of dime assistance. My only option was loans. Now, I have $65,000 in student loans and I'm only a teacher.

But, where I live, everyone has a college degree. If I decided not to go to college, I'd be working in a grocery store or similar paying job. So, I would be damned if I didn't go to college and I damned because I did.

There is no win-win situation. I do believe that student loans are probably the root of a lot of problems in the economy. A college education is required for many, many jobs now and you really NEED to go to college. Yet, there is no help for people who can't afford to pay out of pocket.

Now, there is a whole new generation of people in their 20's and early 30's that can't afford to go out and buy cars, buy their own homes or even put a little of their money back into the economy. Their paychecks are all going to Sallie Mae!!!!

Talk to your school. If your financial aid is going to be coming through many schools understand this and will not make you pay your fees up front because they know that the financial aid will cover it. As for your books, could you get a loan from family or friends and pay them back when you get your financial aid?

The best thing would be for you to get a federal student loan or a scholarship. Your parents don't have to be involved in these.

Here's what you need to do to get a federal loan:

1) Fill out the FAFSA. This will determine if you are eligible for financial aid. Go here:

2) Once you are eligible for aid, choose a government-based student loan. The best loan to get is a Federal Perkins Loan. These have low interest rates and the government will help you pay it back as long as you stay enrolled in school. You also don't need a cosigner or good credit for it. For more info go here:
