The only programs that I'm aware of are the military and the Peace Corps (both of which require a commitment). There are different payment options that you may qualify for. The income-based repayment plan is an option on federal loans, but this plan (if you qualify) will spread your payments over 25 years... and you'll accrue a lot more interest this way (so it should only be used if absolutely necessary). However, I believe that if you work for a non-profit, public service firm for 10 years then any amount leftover is forgiven... it's worth looking into. There are a lot of websites with information about this repayment option. They're working on new legislation for student loans, but this will only affect future students, not loans that have already been taken out (unfortunately).

I don't know about your situation, but for me, the whole reason I had to take out loans is because I wasn't born in to a "rich" family, and that usually does make a difference because if you can afford college, why would you take out loans? No I don't get help from my parents to pay them off.. If you can't pay them off then i dont know what happens... but i dont think its good! bills are like paying rent, paying for electricity, water, groceries, if you have kids then you have to pay for their stuff too, and then you have medical bills etc
