Where can I apply for an uncertified (direct to student) private student loan?

We Answered:

When you run out of other options to get funding for your education, it may be time to get a private loan. These loans, also called alternative loans, come with a number of features and are somewhat flexible. Here is what you need to know about how to choose a private loan for your education needs.

Just how much you can borrow is in accordance with your credit rating. A private loan gives you the option to borrow just what you need. Assuming you have some funding from a lower interest source, you will only want to borrow what the other lending agencies did not give you for your educational needs.

Of course there are, but it's always a good idea to file FAFSA first to see if you're eligible for grants and financial aid. You can do so until June 30th.

Wells Fargo is the ONLY major lender who is offering this type of product at the present time.

Keep something else in mind - if there were other lenders in this market, they would be applying the same ultra-conservative lending criteria as Wells Fargo does. Noncertified loans are a very high risk form of lending. If you were rejected by Wells Fargo, you would be rejected by any other lenders, as well.

I'm sorry for the disappointing news. If you need additional funds, above and beyond your Staffords, talk to your parents about the government's PLUS loan program. They (not you) can borrow an amount limited only by your unmet financial need. If your parents should happen to be rejected for the PLUS loan, you will be eligible to borrow a few thousand more from the Stafford program.

Good luck.
